The North Gatehouse of Beaumaris Castle in Anglesey, Wales. This castle, one of those constructed by King Edward I to defend his newly-conquered territories in the north-west of Wales, was left incomplete when work finished in 1330, but was still one of the largest and most expensive structures ever built at that time. The depicted gatehouse was originally intended to extend nearly to twice its current height, and was modelled under the similar gatehouse at Harlech.
